p120i00Parts of southwestern Pennsylvania, western Maryland and West Virginia have been buried in deep snowpack since January; some areas have been covered in 4-5 feet for the past month! Over the last several days, temperatures across this region have risen substantially, with day-time highs making it into the upper 40s to near 60 degrees. This weekend, a large area of low pressure will bring coastal moisture inland along with continued warmer temperatures, and heavy rain is expected to cause major flooding as the snowpack rapidly melts. These areas are especially prone to extreme flash-flooding given the mountainous terrain, and residents are bracing for what may be yet another historic weather event. In 1996, a similar snow-melt event caused catastrophic flooding in Allegany Co, MD., where homes along the usually gentle waters of George's Creek in Westernport and Lonaconing were swept miles down-stream, while several major businesses and car dealerships along Will's Creek in the Cumberland area were complete losses as well. See a related story in the Cumberland Times-News for more.
