A cluster of storms just west of the Azores is currently trying to organize and intensify. The National Hurricane Center has designated it as Tropcal Depression Two. Deep convection is occurring to the west side of what appears to be the center of circulation. The area of interest will encounter fairly warm surface waters as it continues it's western track. With little upper level shear forecasted in the immediate future, the NHC is expecting the storm to slowly intensify, with a better than 50/50 shot of it becoming a tropical storm in the next 24 hours. It would be the first tropical storm of the season in the Atlantic, and would be named Ana. Stay tuned for updates!

THE LATATEST ON TD 2: 500 PM AST...2100 UTC...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION TWO WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 14.3 NORTH...LONGITUDE 35.0 WEST OR ABOUT 710
MILES...1140 KM...WEST OF THE SOUTHERNMOST CAPE VERDE ISLANDS.

THE DEPRESSION IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 14 MPH...23 KM/HR. A
GENERAL MOTION TOWARD THE WEST IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT
48 HOURS.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 35 MPH...55 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. SLOW STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE...AND THE DEPRESSION COULD
BECOME A TROPICAL STORM DURING THE NEXT DAY OR TWO.

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1006 MB...29.71 INCHES.

And there is a vigorous wave moving off the African Coast line, which has a 50% chance of development. A LARGE AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS BETWEEN THE CAPE VERDE
ISLANDS AND AFRICA IS ASSOCIATED WITH A VIGOROUS TROPICAL WAVE.
SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS POSSIBLE OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS
AS IT MOVES TO THE WEST AT 10 TO 15 MPH. THERE IS A MEDIUM
CHANCE...30 TO 50 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL
CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.

I would appreciate it if you would post that stuff in the Tropical Depression Two thread.

0 #1 JC Surfs 2009-08-11 22:24 Wow… Were already on TS 9 in the Pacific.. It is donut city in our region!!! The good thing is that none of the spinners are posing any significant threat of landfall. Thinking on this end may put this Atlantic possible on a northerly trek.

On my profile, I posted a couple of pics of what we get from the swell factor from these tropical cyclones.. Some of the surf to hit our coast crested at over 30 feet in late July.. It was most amazing to chase in the central Plains on July 22… then surf the monsters on July 25th. Amazing contrast for sure.

The video that James Reynolds posted of the Taiwan landfall was awesome.. Really appreciate the video that James gets. Be sure to check out his site to see it..

Thanks Dave for posting the updates and for the updates on James Reynolds..

+1 #3 Zack_OKC 2009-08-12 11:08 I don't think we'll have to worry much about TD-2 as it's just not organizing very well. Recent moderate southeasterly shear of 10-20 knots and dry saharan air wrapping into the storm will likely hamper any major development of this system. I predict at the very least a weak tropical storm. Sides there are not many storms this far north of the lesser Antilles that make it to the U.S.

Perhaps of more significance would be a new and much broader and strong wave coming off the coast of Africa. The models are developing this system into a impressive cyclone, directing it towards the Gulf by the end of the month. I think this one needs to be watched.
