At last analysis, a 960mb typhoon with sustained winds of 75 knts (analagous to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale) was located a few hundred miles west of Taiwan in the Western Pacific. The Japanese Meteorological Agency forecasts some strengthening, as the storm encounters warm surface waters and little wind shear. The storm is forecasted to attain sustained wind speeds of 90 knts and a drop in pressure to 925mb before possibly hitting northern parts of the Taiwan island. This would make Morakot a dangerous strong Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

James Reynolds of typhoonfury.com is flying out to Taiwan to intercept this powerful storm! Stay tuned for upcoming details!

Just seen some images from this Typhoon on our news and scenes ot total destruction everywhere.
Talk of 2.5 mts of rain !!
Sadly there were the enevitable fatalities as well.
Having seen some of James Reynolds previous Storm Intercepts and it being clear that he puts himself right in the firing line i hope that he is okay and we will see something from him soon.

Also a bit of info on the news about a seperate Typhoon that has hit Japan as well ?

Not sure if i should post the news footage up before James posts his footage ?
Certainly dont want to steal his post, he was there ! I only watched the news.

Very devastating.

I've seen some footage of an entire Hotel falling into the sea. Incredible!
Luckily, they'd supposedly evacuated everyone.

When, oh, when will man learn not to build where the ocean reigns?

Looks like a good one. The whole Pacific has been pretty active for a couple weeks. Pacific donuts make great surf for us here in So Cal.

Be Safe James... Get some of the coastal surge shots if possible. The breakwall protection in Taiwan is amazing. Your the best mate!

The Atlantic has been off to a pretty slow start. Click on my username for a global outlook glance.

Thanks for blog entry Reed and the comments guys. I've landed safely in Taipei and now on bus into city centre surfing mobile broadband.

Plan to relocate very early tomorrow morning to NE coast of Taiwan to meet Morakot head on. I'll be updating Reed on my progress!!

Cheers,

James
