A shortwave trough will dig into the northern Plains and upper Mississippi River Valley this evening, increasing the liklihood for severe weather from Minnesota extending into northern Kansas. The 18z NAM shows that the strongest shear will be in place just east of the areas of greatest instability, so this will limit the "outbreak" potential, but all modes of severe weather will be possible, including supercells, before the (expected) eventual evolution into an MCS later in the evening over the northern Missouri vicinity.
This is a fairly typical pattern for this time of year ... Iowa is actually somewhat (in)famous among storm chasers as the MCS capital of the world. There will likely be a few chasers streaming this evening, so be sure to check out the Live Video tab!
UPDATE! Here is a screen capture taken from Andrew Butler's stream at just before 5:00PM Central! A tornado has been confirmed with this storm, at Spicer, MN!

Re:Severe weather expected today across the Corn Belt
Jul 15 2009 15:15:18 Kudos to Andrew!!
I was out spotting a bit east of where Andrew was, and it was very hard to see where the storms actually were due to enormous amounts of scud flying by - Andrew didn't have an easy job of it, I'm sure! A link to some local news coverage on the storm in Spicer, MN. kstp.com/news/stories/S1028623.shtml?cat=1 |
