Severe weather outbreak likely today! Strong tornadoes possible!! PDF Print E-mail

day1otlk_1630The necessary ingredients are coming together for a significant severe weather day in Kansas, western Missouri and Oklahoma. High instability and strong deep layer shear coupled with some surface boundaries will create an environment favorable for explosive supercell thunderstorm development this afternoon across southern Kansas, with the threat spreading into Missouri and Oklahoma later in the day. Given the parameters, strong tornadoes are possible with any storms that do form, with the storms themselves likely to be right-movers with very slow storm-relative motion. Dangerously large hail will also pose a significant threat.
The addition and placement of the surface boundaries, projected timing of initiation and general environment in this region make this perhaps the most threatening severe weather day of the year to date for the southern Plains. Numerous chasers will be covering this event, so be sure to follow along on the Live Video tab. As always, the public is urged to remain alert to changes and have a plan in place if warnings are issued!

This was certainly true with the 'lurker' many of us were watching make a strong right turn and head straight toward Greensburg.
From my point of view, it took forever for that cell to move along past. Painfully slow. All I could think about were the people in Greensburg, and the surrounding area having to wait, and wait, and wait...Ack!

-1 #2 phoenixrisen7 2009-06-09 13:30 You're among friends Ben. I feel your pain. The same goes for me as well.

-1 #3 charles38 2009-06-09 14:58 it certainly does look a major severe storms outbreak in the central plains today.i was hit with torrential rains early this morning till mid morning.the severe storms missed my area, and hit from poughkeepsie down into eastern pa including reading pa over into philly into central and northern ny nyc li,ny and ct.the severe storms really exploded over these areas early this morning on radar and especially enhanced ir sat pic imagery.

-1 #4 charles38 2009-06-09 15:00 oops,i meant to say severe storms into central and northern nj and not central and northern ny.its severe storms into central and northern nj into nyc.

+2 #5 stormin_nz 2009-06-09 15:21 hahaa - the chase is on! It looks like a flock of birds migrating with all the cars firing off in the same direction like that. All the best people - get some great data

+2 #6 scotsman52 2009-06-09 16:24 once again this texan is blind see the storms but no chasers on the map lol

+5 #7 MDH 2009-06-09 17:48 The cell to to the southwest of dodge is developing a hook.

In fact… it`s headed right for Greensburg…

Hm.

-1 #8 ks_stormchaser 2009-06-09 17:50 I'm in holyrood, I haven't had anything yet, but it looks like a good storm coming in from the southwest.——I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I just hope all the hype(in my area) don't turn out to be as severe as a popcorn fart in the wind

-1 #9 ks_stormchaser 2009-06-09 18:02 I got a friend that lives in macksville(the cop that was killed during the greensburg tornado ishis stepdad) just called me and said it is getting pretty nasty there

+1 #10 FinFan 2009-06-09 18:15 David Drummond's storm looks promising north of Caldwell…

-1 #11 MDH 2009-06-09 18:31 http://www.stormchasertv.com/ - you can view this live to see the cell near Greensburg. While it does not look to be currently productive of any tornadoes, the updraft has a very nice twist to it, and it`s beautiful to see.

I wish my luck to TVN and sean casey as well. Hopefully things will get a bit more organized in their sector during the upcoming hours.

EDIT: Reports of a LARGE tornado in missouri… hmmm. It looks like the national weather service predicted the bubble everything was going to happen around instead of where everything was going to happen

-1 #12 Heidi 2009-06-09 19:13 BUST. Best looking storm on radar right now is about 45 miles northeast of me and I am sitting at home.

-3 #13 ks_stormchaser 2009-06-09 19:46 I agree Heidi- all the talk-all the hype about an outbreak, from NWS, SKYWARN, NOAA, and every other source I seen, if there is going to be an outbreak in kansas, I got to see it to believe it, and I am not gonna hold my breath!!! By the way that cell out by Greensburg and Macksville disappeared like a fart in the wind!!

-2 #14 JC Surfs 2009-06-10 10:18 Well.. That cell that developed west of Greensburg was pretty good at the initiation west of Ford… We were on it from Ford all the way to the East side of Greensburg before it dissapated.. I have some good close range footage of at (3) brief ground circs. Good vid of the rapid rotation… a good large funnel dropping right down on top of us… We had a stellar day… No long trackers.. but some really close range action… We are very happy to be on that cell prior to rotation in great position.

The video is up now…

-2 #15 Caleb 2009-06-10 13:38 Today looks interesting. There is a large slight area acrost North centrel TX into Arkansas and then up into sothern IN down into Kentuckey and then getting into TN. There are 2 tornado warnings in Nabraska these 2 supercells have exstreme rotation. There is a low pressure system centerd over centrel Oklahoma That's helping to get the moisture into that area. Tomarrow there is a 30% chance for all of Kentucky and TN to Ohio and southern IN

-1 #16 scotsman52 2009-06-10 15:51 whose on the twister in wy oming??
once again i am blind in texas i can pick up chasers at work but not at home at times

-1 #17 FinFan 2009-06-10 17:21 Why aren't there a lot of chasers out? I see four tornado warnings right now and no video… What gives?
