Severe weather outbreak set to unfold across Central U.S.! PDF Print E-mail
News - Tornadoes

The ingredients appear to be coming together for a widespread severe weather outbreak across western Illinois, Missouri and points south and west. Low level moisture has been streaming north into Missouri throughout the day, as the warm, moist airmass in place over this area continues to grow increasingly unstable. CAPE values are projected to reach 4,000 J/kg into Missouri by 00z! A remnant MCV (Mesoscale Convective Vortex) currently over southwest Missouri will spark numerous severe thunderstorms ahead of a cold front that will surge in from the west this evening. Discrete supercells with extremely large hail and strong tornadoes are possible, but an intense squall line is likely to be the dominant convective mode ahead of the front. Embedded supercells capable of tornadoes, destructive winds and very large hail will be possible with the squall line as well, so this is not to be discounted!

In Oklahoma and southeast Kansas, the airmass will be much more unstable, but a stronger cap over the area will suppress convection until later in the day. Explosive thunderstorm development is likely in this area this evening, where extremely large hail will be the predominant threat along with the possibility for isolated tornadoes.
Numerous chasers will be in the field for this event, so be sure to follow along by clicking the LIVE VIDEO tab at the top left. People in the risk areas should remain aware of the dangerous severe weather potential and monitor their local conditions as necessary!

Greatings Ilona.

I'm sure they're all fine.. Probably more than fine lol.
Remember, they're chasing in the SRV, not an SUV. It's built to withstand tornadoes.

I understand it was the srv, but i didn't now it was a intercept vehicle, i was in the understanding that the SRV was build to protect them, because the wanned to get more information with the radar and therefore needed to get closer.
I'm sorry if i understand it wrong. Need to read better englisch i think.

Ilona,
You've understood correctly. The SRV is designed for protection and close radar data captures of verticle winds; not for intercept.
And, your english is fine.

Still sitting here in Springfield. Thinking of heading to the west here into that new Tornado Watch box. Some gravity waves showing up on visible satellite. We're just streaming the inside of our van right now

For some reasion I have one of those "gut feelings" about this event. I might be just over reacting

I'm starting to have a gut feeling that I may be wasting my time, money and gas ;)

God nothing but rain. It's all headed in my direction. All the storms will miss me. I hate when it becomes just a bunch of thunder showers.

i agree- though its still evolving this has already been a disappointment- yesterday the storms were predicted to start firing in the early afternoon- its 4 or 5 pm depending on location and theres been 5 hail reports! The thunderstorms earlier cooled the atmosphere in some prime areas so the chance in my opinion should be downgraded to slight in some areas- there will be some tornadoes but once agin i think this was way overhyped!

Anxiously awaiting something, I hope! I recently became a spotter in Woodford county, I'm hoping to get called out for the 1st time tonight. Anyone know where Reeds heading?

I'm right under the gun in Columbia, Mo And Even though I love storms, I can't help but feel this will be a tornado outbreak, with at least 2 EF-2+ tornadoes. At the same time I'm afraid, I can't help but feel "giddy". I'm in the Hatched area for Tornadoes AND 2" hail.

@ EMB and bholcomb.. Whoa!! Just checkin in and looks like a bust as far as what SPC and models showed.. The famous weather statement:

Stranger Things Have Happened !!!!!

Still some time left.. just does not look like a producing event as of this post. My chase would have been in the southern part of Missouri getting noda mucho evento...

I think Reeds got a good position if anything is going to fire..

Over this one.. Today? the ocean is my friend...Going surfing mates.

It is very cool to see Reed and the crew in Northern Missouri and possibly heading into SE Iowa for a storm chase. Iowa has had its fair share of big tornadoes over the past few years.

I am not an expert; far from it, in fact, but based on what I have thus far seen, it is my personal and rather inexperienced belief that this one is probably gonna blow over...shame. I had my hopes up for a good one. Ah well, such is life. Feel free to rub it in my face if I am wrong.

I think it's gonna be a very busy night, but I don't think there was enough sunshine in this area to be as big of an weather event than 1st thought. Strong storms still heading this way towards Eastern, Iowa. Still looking forward to possible tornadoes...I'm not giving up hope just yet. I just hope they stay out in the open & stray from people & homes.

It's a little hard to tell for sure but Chad Cowan (ChaseTheStorms) may have just had a large tornado on his stream. Very low, impressive wall cloud at the very least.

Edit: Chad confirms that it was a large tornado, now rain-wrapped.

TVN is streaming tornado damage in/near Kirksville MO right now.

I think I saw it a while back, I think on some guy from severe studios. It looked like precipitation, but like I said, I am no expert, none at all, so it could have been the tornado.
