Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak that ravaged Oklahoma and Kansas. Over 70 tornadoes occurred across the region that day, including the infamous Bridge Creek-Moore F-5. Reed and crew were freshmen at OU at the time, and they documented the monster F-5 from beneath a highway overpass. As quoted from Reed's description of the video on YouTube

**WARNING!! DO NOT TAKE COVER UNDERNEATH AN OVERPASS WHEN A TORNADO IS APPROACHING!!!*** This video defines the beginning of storm chasing for TornadoVideos.net. We knew very little about storm structure or forecasting back then, but we learned fast on May 3, 1999. This video is a great example of how NOT to safely storm chase. Seeking shelter under an overpass is a HUGE mistake, since the winds actually accelerate there when a tornado approaches.

Hey guys and gals, I'm new to the site so this is my first post! Thanks for having me! lol

But I recall the day the storms moved through Moore and the surrounding communities. I was in Tulsa heading back from OKC...we had gone to watch a baseball game and we new it looked way stormy so we kept on truckin for home! So we stopped at Catoosa to catch a bite to eat and they had a TV on there at the restaurant that was showing OKC broadcasts and I distinctly remember Gary England saying that there was an EF-5 on the ground, a powerful, destructive tornado and that in order to surrive in its path you had to get below ground. He practically was begging people to get below ground not to hide in a closet or in a bathroom that it had to be below ground! I just remember it sent chills through my body listening to it! I stll get chills talking about it today

Few things then...

First of all, I'm currently in high school so I can't say I 'remember' this day, but I know the date when I hear it based on research and such. So I cannot say I know exactly because I remembered it. But from what I have read and this forum of course leads me to easily believe this is something that is better that I do not have any memories from. The impact on the area that got hit, the impact on lives that lived through it or even simply remember, as Jo put it. All of course was a huge eye opener for people. We must remember although there are many negatives to such a disaster, we must look on the bright side and search to find one. I think many will agree that it brought a learning experience, even to Reed at that time for taking cover under an overpass. Now we know not to do that. So, in a sence, thats my 'experience' with this definatly memorable day.

Amazing footage by Reed, one thats sure to make sure noone forgets this day. Sometimes I am shocked if and when I find out someone does not know anything about this day (unless of course they are younger then myself).

And as a side note, the last few seconds of the tape... wow does Reed ever look young! 10 years of course, but really hasn't changed too much. Compliments to you
For anyone that knows who I'm talking about, does anyone else see a bit of Pelle Almqvist? Depending on the picture you look at of Pelle but I see a bit of him in Reed in that shot
First thing that shot to my mind anyway, but maybe its just me... and maybe I'm the only Hives fan on the forum

I remember this day as well. I was 11 years old at the time and if the tornado would have stayed on the ground ten minutes longer, I may very well be telling a much different story...if any story at all. My home was in the projected damage path that evening. We were fortunate though and we only received major hail damage to our roof. After the tornado a call went out to all members of law enforcement, and my father was a Oklahoma County Sheriff Deputy. I went with him to help find people that had been trapped in the debris that used to be people's houses.
I can still remember all of the dead animals that were strewn about from the tornado hitting the Tinker AFB stables.

In Midwest City there is still a large empty lot, where a shopping center was wiped out by the tornado. On Sooner Road just south of I-40 there is a large tree with, what I believe, a 2 ton steel I beam.

I was only 12 at the time of this outbreak so I wasn't able to witness the atmosphere, but granted from what I've read and seen in documentries it was indeed a very memorable day. Looking at that radar image above is just insane.

Hard to belive its been 10 years since that happened. Certainly seems alot shorter to me.

I was on the Kansas side of the storms that day. They defined who a person was, whether one who heads for shelter or who chases. Reed and crew definitely got the extreme end of that chasing, while I the milder. Excellent clips above, but I can never forget how many lives were ended or changed forever that day. Thanks, Reed and crew, for helping keep all of us safer and better informed!!

I agree with you HallsvilleWatcher! This is some of my all time favorite TVN footage, I just can't believe it's been a whole decade since this took place!!

Long long day that was. I was only 5 but i remember it definitely. So sad. nothing worse than probably the most powerful tornado on record going though the burbs of a city. Terrible memories that people have carried from this.

And yeah tomorrow is the Greensburg EF5 anniversary. What are the odds. Hopefully May 5 won't become another day in history.

This is the storm and this is the video that started my odyssey and fascination with severe weather and tornadoes. This is a storm that we may see only see once every few decades- a perfect but terrible beast of a tornado.

That was none the less a HISTORIC day! May 4 2007 was the first EF5 since May 3rd! The May 3rd tornado had winds up to 301 MPH! Anyone know where Heidi got the GR3 photoes of the supercell?

I remember it was one helluva storm. I was watching the storm coverage that night on the weather channel.

That echo is sweet. Classic coma. I don't think I ever seen a cell with such a distinct hook. Awesome storm!!

I wanted to jump ahead abit and draw attention to the west coast storm approaching north cal oregon and Washington coast- this has readings like a november storm -a monster low nearing tropical storm or almost approaching hurricane mb reading 975- we have high wind warnings and storm warnings along the coast. By the time this system crosses the rockies i think we may see a big outbreak in a few days depending on the instability of the southern plains. Once again the west has provided all the ingredients(and i would say well above average strength) so may 7-10 may be very active. Once again i will have to check the models for the plains and gulf but this looks promising !

I was only 3 years old when this happened, so I don;t remember it at all. I'm not sure I would remember it anyway because I live in a different state...Today (may 4) is also the 2-year anniversary of the Greensburg EF5, so there's a lot of remembering to do. My thoughts are with everyone today!

The Grensburg tornado had winds up tp 205 MPH. And believe it or not the tornado that hit the town was really DISSAPATING!! So the tornado could have been stronger. The hook echo on that storm was AMAZING!!! it had a little hole where the tornado sat so I guess the meso was exstremely strong. After the tornado hit Greensburg it curved and disspapated. But the supercell that produced the mammoth tornado was'nt finished it continued to produce tornadoes. It produced an EF3 near Trousdale. (sorry if I didn't spell it right) This supercell had SOFTBALL TO GRAPEFRUIT sized hail! I was at a Movie Theater when This happend! When I got home it was just about to hit. Again NEVER SEEK SHELTER UNDER AN OVERPASS!! The winds can exseed what the tornado is. Here is a radar image of the May 4 2007 tornado
ceaselesswind.com/greensburg_3D_small.png
You can see the DEBRIES in the mesocyclone!! And did any one notice that both tornado tracks curved a little?

about pacific storm- here in the cascade foothills near seattle weve had winds hittting 50 mph large limbs down- this low is a monster- will be a big severe weather maker by the time it hits the plains !

Yes, I remember this video. It was the first thing I saw online and then joined Reed's bandwagon! I blame him.

Certainly copped a lot of flack from seasoned chasers Reed did with this video - nothing like hindsight eh?!
