Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Little Rock conducted a damage survey in Mena, AR yesterday after a tornado devastated the town Thursday evening. The team has assigned a preliminary rating of EF-3, with a path length of 14.5 miles.

TornadoVideos.net streamer Brian Emfinger was also in Mena on Friday covering the damage for KHBS-KHOG TV. He estimated that the path of this tornado was close to a half-mile wide, with the most intense damage found over a 4-6 block area.

The photos at right show the remains of a concrete Masonic lodge where one of the three fatalities occurred. More photos of the damage in Mena and from Brian's chase on Thursday can be found at his website, http://www.realclearwx.com

I found out today that the house in that first picture was where another fatality occurred. The house is actually just one block north from the Masonic Lodge on the same road (Hwy 8 ).

Also, here is the link to google street view of the area. This is the same house in the first picture. The masonic lodge is viewable by looking down the street to the left on the same side.

@Brian.. By the looks of the damage and such... F3 seems kind of understated. In research of the aftermath of this, it appears to be on the bottom end of an F4.

I agree JC...low end F4...especially from the 2nd picture.

the new fujita scale if im not mistaken ,is now the standard norm for classification not only of damage like the old f scale but of more accurate wind speed. the wind speeds have changed slightly in lower denominations in the new ef scale but the damage understanding and estimation is more exact now than what they used to understand. ex. what used to be called an f-4 could have been done by a more intense f-3 and so on.

Dale has a point re the EF ratings it is well documented that even low end tornadoes can cause severe damage - it depends on what structures the tornado strikes...
