Severe Weather With Tornadoes Affecting Southeastern US! PDF Print E-mail
News - Tornadoes

At this time there are 4 tornado watches up in the Southeastern part of the US, including Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, and Indiana! There have been a handful of tornado reports thus far, including a tornado in Bay St. Louis, MS along the shoreline.

500mbA strong, negatively tilted upper level trough is centered in SE Oklahoma and it's associated jet streaks rounding the base are providing significant energy for storms to develop.

850mbAnother contributing factor to the tornadic potential today is the backing of the winds at 850mb. This is creating strong turning of winds with height, a key ingredient for tornadoes. Dewpoints across the regions are in the 60s, with upper 60s in select areas. Storms that form in areas of most instability (at this time through central Alabama and Tennessee per the RUC analysis) will need to be watched extra closely!

The tornado watch for me has a moderate risk for tornadoes. Looks like the south will get the worst of it though. They've had it bad this past week.

Just heard a couple cracks of thunder nearby. Rain is starting too. The storms are getting really close.

Just came back from a short 1 1/2hr chase to Dayton and back trying to intercept a small(non-severe) cell. It must have been cooking though because I couldn't quite get to it during the daylight. We were doing 70 most of the time, but traffic had us slow down a lot at time too. My brother came and should have taken some really cool CG footage. We're beginning to get the main stuff now at home.

The west has been pumping out classic lows. Here in Seattle the weather has been the worst ive seen in 20 years- cold temps wind snow hail heavy rain thunder you name it- the ingredients have been missing in the plains and the South- either the systems outrace the moisture or the its just not unstable enough for a classic outbreak. This Sunday could be the one along the gulf coast maybe in my humble opinion.

today was basically a joke...that cold front overtook everything so fast in the south...what we couldnt figure out is why the SPC issued a public outlook for strong tornadoes in mississippi and eastward when the cold front was pushing well into alabama at the time which changed the surface winds from the ssw to basically a wnw direction making it basically impossible for anything but those cells to ride the cold front like a squall...there was plenty of moisture to work with today...we might have had different results if warm sector wouldve had more time...i dont think i saw one supercell on radar today!

In regards to my earlier post it looks like once again the South will be missing key component -this time it looks like a growing dryline will inhibit storm development- its too bad as that low coming that way is just as strong as Thursdays- and today again hail and snow hit the Seattle lowlands- record lows and record rainfall that broke 110 year old records! Next week will be quiet as theres no real lows coming in from the west until next thursday! In fact it might hit 68 in Seattle Monday- thank god!
