At this time there are 4 tornado watches up in the Southeastern part of the US, including Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, and Indiana! There have been a handful of tornado reports thus far, including a tornado in Bay St. Louis, MS along the shoreline.
A strong, negatively tilted upper level trough is centered in SE Oklahoma and it's associated jet streaks rounding the base are providing significant energy for storms to develop.
Another contributing factor to the tornadic potential today is the backing of the winds at 850mb. This is creating strong turning of winds with height, a key ingredient for tornadoes. Dewpoints across the regions are in the 60s, with upper 60s in select areas. Storms that form in areas of most instability (at this time through central Alabama and Tennessee per the RUC analysis) will need to be watched extra closely!
