nam_221_2011040312_f12_wspd_500_mb nam_221_2011040312_f36_wspd_500_mbA large upper-level trough is currently strengthening and advancing east over the Rocky Mountains, eventually bringing a threat for severe thunderstorms to portions of the central Plains and mid-Mississippi Valley this afternoon and evening. Eastern Kansas into Missouri, Iowa and Illinois all stand the chance of seeing severe thunderstorms beginning late this afternoon. Although forecast models are still suggest that a strong cap should suppress convective initiation for most of the day over a large part of the risk area, low-level moisture will continue to stream into the region, resulting in modest to high instability; strong directional wind shear over this area suggests that the initial mode for any storms that do fire should be supercellular. Strong tornadoes and extremely large hail will be possible with these storms, along with damaging winds. As the storm system evolves and shifts eastward (progression illustrated by 500mb winds, above), the wind fields will intensify substantially but should be mostly unidirectional, bringing what at this time would appear to be a major damaging wind threat to a wide area near and east of the Mississippi River on Monday. Lower-level wind fields are currently not matching up with the upper level winds in a way that would suggest a major tornado outbreak--a few days ago, forecast models were showing a near-apocalyptic scenario unfolding for the mid-South, but that does not appear to be what residents will have to be dealing with at this time. Regardless, lines of intense severe thunderstorms capable of very damaging winds do seem likely, and tornadoes will still be possible overnight Sunday throughout the day on Monday, so residents of these areas are encouraged to carefully monitor local outlooks and advisories for the latest. TVN will be chasing today and possibly Monday, and a number of chasers will be streaming on the Live page as well, so be sure to check out what's happening in real-time!

A significant hail event just hit metropolitan Milwaukee, I captured the end of the storm with hailstones 1/2 in in diameter and hail covering the ground up to 3/4 of an inch deep. Latest MKE doppler radar loop showed a moderate storm developing and then passing right through the city

I also live in Milwaukee. That hailstorm was awsome! Everything was covered in white. It looked like a snowstorm came through. I heard there were a couple of spinouts, that's how bad it was. I hope was can get more of this interesting weather. :o

In Grand Rapids Mi we had some severe lightning and some thundersnow (I guess that is what you would call it)but not much more. Must be Lake Michigan killed off the hailstorm.

I was watching TWC earlier today not even 2 hours ago and they gave Mississippi a 7/10 chance for tornadoes. I feel bad for Mississippi it was about this time last year that the Yazoo City tornado came through and now they are probably going to have another Tornado. I live in GA and they gave Georgia and Alabama a 50% chance of a tornado. Tornadoes in the SE are three times worse not only because we aren't used to that kind of weather but also,The trees make it very difficult to see anything, but we already knew that.there are very few of us here who know how to really tell whats really going on with the weather. I hope we see some nice storms but then again i hope we don't. :sigh:

I'm in North Metro Georgia and we had some tornados rip through a few years ago. I'm hoping it doesn't happen again. I've got horses and it is hard to know what to do when severe weather breaks out. I've been watching this storm develop since it showed up on radar yesterday. It's not looking good.

I love the hail pic Larytaz posted. Those are pretty big peices of hail for Milwaukee.

I just looked at doppler a few minutes ago and all I could see was watches and warnings for you guys in the east and south.
I wish as little damage and destruction for you guys in those areas. Write in when you're safe and let the rest of us know how you are doing.

As of right now west georgia, according to the weather channel , is under dark red.the skies are just now getting cloudy and the wind has been whipping all day. I've been checking the national weather service website all day and have been watching it very closely. I have feeling this is going to be big for Georgia. :sigh:
