10.08.09.1.ehiA potentially significant severe weather event could unfold over the Ozark Mountains eastward today. Very strong shear will be in place over an unstable airmass, which is a recipe for strong tornadoes. As noted by the Storm Prediction Center:
SUBSTANTIAL /40+ KT/ LOW LVL SPEED AND DIRECTIONAL SHEAR WILL EXIST
NEAR TRACK OF OZARKS SFC LOW...ESPECIALLY FROM ERN OK ENE INTO NRN
AR/SE MO THIS AFTN...AND ENE INTO SRN IL/IND A BIT LATER THIS EVE.
ALONG THIS AXIS...TRAINING SUPERCELL STORMS MAY PERSIST FOR A
CONSIDERABLE PERIOD OF TIME...POSING A RISK FOR TORNADOES AND/OR
DMGG WINDS THIS AFTN INTO LATE TONIGHT AND POSSIBLY EARLY FRI. 10.08.09.day1probotlk_1300_torn
People in and around eastern Oklahoma into northern Arkansas, southern Missouri, western Kentucky and southern Illinois should pay special attention to weather statements today, and have fresh batteries in your NOAA weather radios, as there could be multiple rounds of storms! Several chasers should be streaming this event on the Live page as well.
