A tornadic supercell has been raging across central Minnesota this evening, prompting tornado warnings for the Minneapolis Metro area; at least one tornado has been confirmed just west of Minneapolis near the city of Mound! The storm is currently just to the northeast of the metro, moving due east toward the Wisconsin border. This storm formed in a very explosive environment and for a good while it looked as though this evening was going to be another "cap bust," meaning the cap was too strong to allow thunderstorm development, but this storm was able to break through and is definitely taking advantage of the available ingredients (extreme instability and strong shear). A tornado watch has also been issued for east-central Minnesota into western Wisconsin.

No worries, cz. Nothing near Minneapolis but cold wet fall drizzle these days. All the tornadoes have gone far, far south for the winter.

Heck, if that tornado lasted 2 months, Sean Casey would have lots of time to get that shot

I was out with another Spotter last night and saw the Tornado touch down. We were just west of Long Lake, I believe on cty24. We did not see anything definitive on the radar but the sky looked good. All of a sudden NWS called us and asked what we saw because the hook was right on top of us, the radar updated and sure enough. We saw some power flashes and trees down and all of a sudden we hit an area with no trees to our north and the Tornado was literally a couple hundred feet away on the ground. Unfortunately no pics because we were dodging trees and power lines. We stayed on the phone with NWS for the next hour and followed it all the way up to 694. Ended up being a great chase that was really just lucky. Here is one bad cell phone pick just as atree and power lines went down, the Tornado is about 1/4 mile away.

How did you get the nws to call you? They see your phone number on spotter network or something?

Yea we were hooked up on Spotter Network. My partner has worked with the NWS in the past so there is a relationship and they know they can trust his report. I wish it was because of me but i am still working on my rep.

I was camping this weekend when these storms moved through. I was in Jump River Wisconsin. last night we were all sitting around the fire listing to the radio about the severe storms and it was heading in our direct path. about mid night I had just gone into the camper to sleep when the owner of the campground and told everyone to get the hell out of there, a tornado was spotted 3 miles southwest and was heading for us. He had called a local bar that had a basement and they stayed open for us. we all left, got to the bar, got a drink and headed to the basement and stayed there for about and hour. we watched the tv on the storm, and when it passed and was done for the evening we went back and went to bed. Not much damage just a few branches down. But where I live in Medford, Taylor County had flood and tornado watches. I was a bit nervous coming home this morning. But not much here either just a few branches, We were lucky it mostly went south (not by much).
