untitled untitled2What the NWS out of Norman, Oklahoma called a historically significant, unprecedented late season blizzard is due to begin affecting parts of the southern High Plains tonight.

A very dynamic system is forecasted to eject into the central part of the country, causing the potential for severe weather and tornadoes in the warm sector. However, what will probably be remembered with this system is the massive snowstorm that will be created on the low's backside. NWS offices out of Norman, Dodge City, and Amarillo (not to mention others) are sounding the alarm by putting up Winter Storm Warnings and Blizzard Warnings! QPF amounts are showing snowfall totals to perhaps exceed 30+ inches in parts of SW Kansas! Temperatures will be cold enough through Western Oklahoma and deep into the South Texas Panhandle to support all snow by Friday evening.

TVN will be leaving this evening for an initial target of Liberal, KS, which seems to be the sweet spot for the heaviest snow accumulations at this time. We'll be streaming this even throughout it's entirety so stay tuned!

Not as bad as forecasted here in Perryton yet...the low is still out in New Mexico, but we are still supposed to get 12 inches when it comes through. If you make it through and need a place to stay I have a bed in the basement.

Just peeked at David Holder's live stream. Ayup! That's what a blizzard looks like, alrighty! White, white, white, and, uh...more white!
Hope the fellas out there in it have plenty of emergency gear for staying warm and alive.
These beasties can really get out of hand in a hurry - if driving in them, a drift across the road may look navigatable, but the wind pounds it down so hard, it'll sieze up your undercarriage - no give to it at all. Blizzard snow is unforgiving.
And the wind just bites your skin; feels like needles pricking any exposed skin. Dangerous, nasty business.
My thoughts and prayers to those venturing anywhere out into this monster.

Never ceases to amaze me that your country has such a diverse severe weather pattern - hot, moist supercell activity one day, heavy snow the next! No shortage of things to discuss! How long is this snow storm system expected to continue?

And, both tornadic storms in one area and a killer blizzard in another at the same time.
Mike, blizzards last for several days, usually. We huddle down, stay inside for the heavy blow and dig out when she calms somewhat.
These are generally so dangerous that folks just stay home - don't even bother going in to work. Many businesses simply close.
The dig out is always unpleasant, as the snow is hardened from the winds and very difficult to shovel, even hard on shear pins on our snow-blowers! The hubby keeps extras around, just for these types of storms.
