The first major winter storm east of the Rocky Mountains will pound parts of Northwest Kansas and western Nebraska tonight through Thursday. Wind gusting over 40 mph, with over a foot of snow will result in whiteout conditions over this area. A winter storm of this magnitude this early in the season is quite rare, but definitely not unprecedented. Right now, all of the precipitation is falling as rain with surface temperatures near 40 at the lowest. However, these low-level temperatures are expected to plummet through the afternoon and overnight as cold advection continues. Check back for updates as this dangerous winter storm unfolds!
