A winter storm watch has been issued for parts of the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan and extreme Northwest Wisconsin for the potential of 5-9 inches of heavy, wet lake effect snow. A strong cold front will move through the northern Great Lakes Region tonight, with 40+ mph northwesterly flow in its wake. Lake effect rain will develop downwind of Lake Superior on Sunday, and will change to heavy snow by Sunday night as temperatures fall below freezing. The heaviest snow will fall in the interior higher terrain, with lesser amounts near the Lake Superior shoreline where extremely warm lake waters will keep much of the precipitation as rain. We hope to chase some intense lake effect snow storms later this season downwind of Lake Ontario, where up to 6 inch per hour snowfall rates happen in the most intense lake effect snow bands.
Don't forget to watch Storm Chasers on Discovery Channel tonight at 10:00 pm eastern!
