Over a half foot of snow has fallen over parts of the Northeast, especially over the higher terrain downwind of the Great Lakes. The hardest hit areas so far have been the higher elevations of Upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, as well as mountainous regions downwind of Lakes Huron and Erie. Up to 11 inches of snow was reported in Tucker County, WV, where lake enhancement and orographic lift were operating in tandem. Shown below are photos from Garrett Co, MD, provided by Heidi's family. Winter storm warnings are still in effect for the above areas, as well as portions of the Lake Erie shoreline where a dominant northwesterly flow lake effect band has set up, originating well up-stream over Lake Huron. The heaviest snow has fallen and will fall further away from the shoreline, since the very warm lake waters have a tendency to change the snow into rain this time of year. ![]() Lake effect is almost as exciting as tornadoes and hurricanes!
