Blizzard conditions were reported across parts of the northern Upper Peninsula of Michigan during much of Saturday, especially along the Lake Superior shoreline, with over a foot of new snow during the last 12 hours in the hardest hit areas. The northwesterly-flow snow belts downwind of Lake Michigan also experienced intense lake effect snow squalls for much of the day, with 2+ inch per hour snowfall rates continuing in Southwest Lower Michigan, Northwest Lower Michigan, and the central Upper Peninsula. The heaviest 12 hour snow accumulation I could find in this region was 14 inches near White Cloud in Newaygo County!!! downwind of southern Lake Michigan. Lake effect snow warnings remain in effect for these areas through at least early Sunday, with an additional 6-10 inches of snow likely. Here is a radar image from late Saturday evening for the Great Lakes Region:

Scott P took these photos from U.S. 2 between Bessemer and Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula, where blizzard warnings were in effect. Visibility was reduced to near zero in the heaviest snow bands, with 40+ mph winds causing substantial blowing and drifting. Thanks to Scott for sharing these!

Don't forget to catch the Storm Chasers marathon on Discovery Channel starting at 1 pm Sunday! The 8th and final episode will air 10:00 pm eastern, with pure tornado insanity!
