The coldest air of the season is expected to invade the Northern U.S. through Tuesday, with -25 to -30C 850 mb temps passing over the Great Lakes Region Monday-Tuesday (see NAM forecast 850 mb temps for 18z this Tuesday below). When this cold air passes over the relatively warm lake waters, a MASSIVE lake effect snow event will hammer the favored snow belts for northwesterly flow, with accumulations over this cold period measured in feet in the hardest hit areas (Central Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Northwest and Southwest Lower Michigan, Southern Ontario downwind of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and to the lee of Lakes Ontario and Erie by mid to late week.

Behind this strong cold front, blizzard conditions have occurred today over the plains of Montana across North Dakota and northern South Dakota, where whiteout conditions have been reported with 40-50 mph wind gusts. The watches and warnings can be seen below, with blizzard warnings in black, and lake effect snow watches in dark purple. The watches will likely be upgraded to winter storm warnings in the next 24 hours, with additional watches needed further east.

Below is a picture showing the recent snow storm from Cleveland, OH, shot by Terri Librande. The second picture shows the heavy snow accumulations in Toledo, OH courtesy of Brandon Copic..two of the hardest hit locations from the recent winter storm - with nearly a foot in accumulations.. Stay tuned for updates regarding this intense cold snap this week!!!
