n incredible ice storm continues to unfold from Oklahoma through the Ohio River Valley, with thunder-sleet and freezing rain widespread across the entire region. 2+ inches of ice accumulation are likely from the Ozark Mountains eastward, with downed trees and massive power outages very likely. The 48 hour precipitation forecast beginning 12z this morning (Tuesday) tells the story, especially since the highest forecast precipitation amounts are in a textbook low-level environment for an ice storm.

Heidi is located in north-central Arkansas, which will be one of the hardest hit areas, and she has reported occasional power outages, thunder-sleet, and 1/2 inch of ice accumulation on top of sleet. The precipitation has been becoming more and more freezing rain, rather than sleet, which is not a good thing for downed trees and power lines. As this storm system continues to move east, a Nor'Easter will intensify over the next 48 hours and absolutely hammer the Northeast with very heavy snow. Winter storm watches and warnings are in effect for the entire Northeast, as this will probably be the biggest snowstorm of the season there.

Here in Norman, heavy sleet and freezing rain has been falling throughout the night and into this morning, as several convective bands with thunder have been moving through. Additional overnight accumulations of up to 1/2 inch have been reported over much of central OK, with substantially higher amounts to the east. We'll shoot some video of the ice here shortly, but if anyone has any pictures of this storm and the Northeast snow please email them to reed@tornadovideos.net so I can post them on the blog for everyone to see!
