Another major winter storm is set to impact the Baltimore-Washington-Philadelphia corridor beginning tomorrow, as a strong surface low deepens just off the Delmarva Peninsula tomorrow evening, bringing coastal moisture inland over an arctic airmass which will be in place over the region. As illustrated by the NAM and GFS snow depth maps, significant snow totals are expected in a swath from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia all the way to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. According to the latest GFS, the cities of Blacksburg, Roanoke and Charlottesville in Virginia north to the Washington, DC, metro communities could see accumulations of 24" or more, while surrounding areas could pick up well over 12." Combined with near-blizzard conditions that are likely due to the strong surface winds, this storm will be capable of crippling the region travel-wise over the weekend. As such, Winter Storm Warnings are already in effect for an area stretching from western North Carolina into western and central Maryland.

Feb 06 2010 17:33:30 This is the first time I've seen a snowstorm with yellows (35 - 45 DBZ range) on the radar reflectivity scans.

Feb 06 2010 17:46:53 Pretty crazy stuff!!! I talked to my friend who lives outside of DC. I asked him to measure the snow. He said it was THIGH HIGH! Now.. I don't know if you could report that measurement, and he really isn't that tall. But still... THAT'S A LOT of snow!!!!
And.. it's still coming down! He is going to send me some pictures soon! |
