The beginnings of a major winter storm are taking shape over the southern plains this morning, as an upper level storm system is moving out of the 4 corners region. Ahead of the system, shallow cold air advection is creating a textbook ice storm situation, as an impressive warm nose slides over the shallow cold air. At this moment, radar is indicating an area of moderate to heavy rainfall moving northward into central Oklahoma where temperatures are already below freezing. With the most extreme case, central Oklahoma could see ice accumulations over one inch and snowfall totals over 5 inches on the backside of the system! Power outages could be widespread with the gusty winds that are expected to increase later today. This is becoming a very dangerous situation! We will be updating through the day with pictures to come later... stay tuned!

In Amarillo, we started with about an inch of sleet this morning and now have about 6-8 inches of snow on top of it and it's still snowing.

I-40 is closed across the entire TX panhandle. US-87 is closed from Amarillo north to Dumas.

A couple weeks ago we had around 1/2 inch of ice here in Des Moines, IA. The freezing rain was coming down so hard here at the airport that the planes all went back to the gates and waited it out! Luckily it warmed up the next day and most of the ice melted from the power lines and trees. Good luck Reed! Hope you have a generator!
