The beginnings of a major winter storm are taking shape over the southern plains this morning, as an upper level storm system is moving out of the 4 corners region. Ahead of the system, shallow cold air advection is creating a textbook ice storm situation, as an impressive warm nose slides over the shallow cold air. At this moment, radar is indicating an area of moderate to heavy rainfall moving northward into central Oklahoma where temperatures are already below freezing. With the most extreme case, central Oklahoma could see ice accumulations over one inch and snowfall totals over 5 inches on the backside of the system! Power outages could be widespread with the gusty winds that are expected to increase later today. This is becoming a very dangerous situation! We will be updating through the day with pictures to come later... stay tuned!
