01.26.10.wwAs previous blog posts have alluded, a major winter storm event is shaping up for the southern Plains east to the Ozarks and middle Mississippi and Tennessee Valley region, where significant ice and snow accumulations could occur Thursday on into the weekend. The models are struggling just a bit on what form the precip will fall as, but the general consensus is still that freezing rain and/or sleet will be the first big problem, followed by significant snowfall. Since the 18z runs yesterday, which is what Reed used when he made his last post, forecast precipitation amounts have actually INCREASED for most of Oklahoma; 850mb temps have also warmed just slightly, suggesting a larger icing event for Oklahoma and even more snow on top of it -- the12z NAM is suggesting as much as 2 FEET of snow along the I-44 corridor! It is hard to imagine a major ice event with a major snowfall on top of it, but right now the models make that look like a real possibility.

We will continue to update as new runs come out. For now, people in the watch area are urged to begin making preparations for power outages and/or impassable roads. This includes stocking up on bottled water, pantry items and candles, having generators in working order with plenty of fuel, etc. Those of you who have been through an extended power outage after a winter storm know that being prepared for an event is extremely important, since outages can often last for weeks with an event of this magnitude, and supplies, including gasoline, can become scarce.

The storm has begun. Here is traffic cameras and message boards for Amarillo Texas! And I must say for 8:45 in the morning there is not much traffic.

9:25 update! Amarillo looks nearly impassable on the roads.
31 in Lubock with heavy rain. Another couple degree drop and this could get really bad!

Oklahoma Traffic Cameras: www.oktraffic.org/map.php
Diclaimer: The OK site loads pretty slow, but once it's up has some really clean images. Doesn't appear to be treacherous in OKC yet.

Just a picture to show what it is like here in the Tennessee Valley:

This image does not do this justice. That was awhile ago. We now have over 3 inches of snow. The interstates are at a stand still. Here's a link to the TDOT smart way cams in Chattanooga, TN.

Honestly, north Georgia appears to be getting the brunt of this storm. It started around 1pm and we've been getting heavy bands of snow off and on! Took most of us here by surprise, because the snow/ice wasn't predicted to move in until after rush hour this evening! Once the snow started.. It was insane! I will be posting a few videos this evening!!

I am moving to Texas from Wisconsin so I get away from all the snow, ice, and freezing temps.

I looks like Texas is getting most of the same weather I am having here! :P

What a winter!

Heidi... just a correction to your post regarding the NAM snow depth model output. Although the model is showing 20+ inches of snow in a swath through central OK... the model assumes all the precip will fall as snow. This is incorrect and proof of this begins at 51hrs (21z) when NAM projects 3 inch snow accumulation in central OK at which time surface temps are sufficiently cold, but 850mb temps are still well above freezing indicating freezing rain or sleet as precip mode. In fact... NAM point soundings for Norman indicate changeover to ALL snow will not occur until 12am-3am Friday morning as warm air around 750mb is slow to erode. By this time most of the heavy precip will have ended, thus the predominant precip type will be freezing rain and/or sleet. Precip amounts after 3am Friday morning are rather light which indicate snowfall in the 1-3 inch range after all the ice/sleet accumulation.

So your comment about major icing event followed by 20+ inch snowfall on top of that is not totally accurate given the model data. 20+ inch snowfall is what central oklahome would see if snow was the predominant precip type, but such will not be the case given strong warm air advection around 750-850mb. Predominant precip type will likely be freezing rain which will surely cut snowfall totals down tremendously and render the NAM snow depth projects highly inaccurate. Just wanted to point this out. No matter what its going to be a big storm... but not quite the way you mentioned.
