A serious winter storm is impacting the central Atlantic region at this time, with crippling snowfall occurring from northern Virginia to Philadelphia. Snowfall rates of 3" per hour are possible in a corridor stretching from Washington, D.C. to western Connecticut, where a very heavy snow band is developing and expected to intensify throughout the day and into the evening. Above are some photos taken this morning by Doug Weimer and Nathan Rawe, as the snow was just starting to pile up in Baltimore, MD -- heavy snow continues there at a rate of 2-3" per hour! This causes SIGNIFICANT snow-removal problems for larger cities, and extra resources have been pulled in from other areas of the state to deal with the chaos in central and eastern Maryland. Farther west in Maryland, parts of Garrett County have already picked up close to 15", with heavy snow still falling. The above-right photo was taken at around noon by Heather Martin of Grantsville. Conditions should begin to improve later this afternoon in western MD, but as the surface low-pressure continues to deepen substantially just off the coast, blizzard conditions will likely develop in central Maryland northeast into western New Jersey. This low is currently undergoing a phenomenon known as "bombogenesis" -- check out this link to learn more!

The upper level energy is really "feeding" this surface low! looks like in a few hours it will continue to get stronger. Thank goodness its not stalling! It would be bad news if it did.
