Here is video from the first day of the TornadoVideos.net - Radiance Technologies tornado field project, invovling the radar (CLOVER) on top of the SRV Dominator, and the 12-foot wingspan RC plane designed to drop 8 parachute probes in the inflow region of tornadoes, where they will be sucked into the vortex while collecting measurements of temperature, dewpoint, and barometric pressure. This footage is from a supercell storm on June 9 that produced a nice wall cloud and two small funnels. We recorded vertical wind data underneath a rotating wall cloud with the SRV, and deployed the plane to the south and east of a rotating wall cloud as the storm crossed an outflow boundary. Radiance will be returning to the field with us for the next few storm chases, so stay tuned for updates! Click READ MORE for video!

Re:Video from TornadoVideos.net - Radiance tornado field project - Day 1
Jun 15 2009 21:43:37 It was interesting to me to see it from the viewpoint in the air from the RC Plane. It defiantly looked menacing from that way of looking at it! I hope it helps to answer some questions, and I know this will be useful to research. Great to see

Re:Video from TornadoVideos.net - Radiance tornado field project - Day 1
Jun 16 2009 16:49:59 I've only just viewed the footage (work commitments) and this thing is cutting edge - although not the first to do so, - but the actual size of the aircraft I do think was the main focus of attention given stability issues with smaller RC aircraft.
The picture quality is very good and the thing with aerial footage is that it gives a whole new perspective to the storm's structure from the mid levels per se. Whilst it's nice to see these things from ground zero, far more can be gotten from this footage re width, scale, height etc and the data collected via the SRV/TRV and probes deployed by both ground and air is something ground breaking in my view. This is why TVN is committed to data collection in the name of science and to help formulate new ideas and thought processes through the weather services and public. This is education on a new level and the scientists will be taking note of what is collected. Reed is spending the dollars to benefit the research into tornadoes and supercells - in fact all types of severe weather so he's not just doing it for selfish reasons (which has been bantered around in the past!) It does not matter how much he gets or how little, everyone in the field is doing their bit and I think we're very fortunate to be part of a forum whereby we can see this stuff live or delayed. There are people on other forums who have not one iota of a clue as to what is happening in the US re weather events and the membership alone is worth a goldmine of information to us. This forum is why so many questions can be answered on other forums who discuss little re the tornadoes and supercells affecting the US at the moment...I can tell you that nobody in Darwin except for me knows what's going on in the US - they may see the odd YouTube video, but hell, I feel so grateful for TVN's efforts in educating and informing us all. Dang...did not mean to ramble but I shake my head in disbelief of the amount I've learned since coming on board TVN. |

Re:Video from TornadoVideos.net - Radiance tornado field project - Day 1
Jun 23 2009 21:27:07 What a great concept coming from the TVN guys. I tried sending a message over youtube and hadn't heard anything so I joined the site to post. Just a couple of questions about the air platform. Are you guys streaming any of the video down from the plane real time? What altitude are you guys flying at? Are you aware of the rules regarding rc/uav/uas video ie. COA's things of that nature? The first question deals with a concept that many private business are bridging at this point. The second two deal with an airspace issue that these same businesses are having issues getting around. I will point you to a link of a forum explaining the many faa rules.
www.dvinfo.net/conf/digital-video-indust...llegal-says-faa.html My company is in N. Norman and I storm chase myself so there is no animosity towards TVN. This is a great idea but there are rules that have been put into place and I was interested on how your company has overcome them. Thanks guys keep up the good work. John Synappsys Digital Services |

You need to tow an ad banner w "TVN" on it
By the way if anyone is streaming I'd be happy to know. That cell near Dallas TX is looking beautiful...
Reed think about it as another Chase vehicle, get the thing up close and personal,LETS HAVE a view of a TORNADO from above...obviously a long range zoom so u wouldnt have to fly the plane to close to a tornado, and i understand it would probably be effected greatly by the surronding winds from the tornado, but if you knew the direction of the tornado, and it was the right size for it,and you had all the calculations in place to asure a safe flight then mayb you could get real close to a Tornado, has any1 even seen a TORNADO from that prespective before? not that i know of,it would almost be ground breaking.I reckon you have an anormous and a great idea on your hands here,an excellent way to add to the collection of data, and videos.
