06.12.09.derechoA derecho has taken shape in northeast Oklahoma and is moving rapidly into Arkansas! Damaging winds of 85 MPH and hail the size of baseballs have already been reported in Oklahoma! The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded most of Arkansas into west Tennessee and northern Mississippi to MODERATE RISK, and a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch has just been issued, with winds in excess of 100 MPH and 3"+ hail possible!! 06.12.09.day1otlk_1630 06.12.09.day1probotlk_1630_wind 06.12.09.pds.ww0388_radar

Also below are some photos of the tornado and storm structure Verne Carlson witnessed last night in eastern Colorado; the tornado itself was very hard to see and photograph due to the danger of baseball sized hail falling and a heavy rain curtain!

I live just outside Conway. We had a tornado warning issue and the first signs of Doppler indicated rotation were right at our area. We had lots of tree and power line damage within a couple miles of our house. I think a lot of people have it a lot worse than we did. Just lost some of the shingles on the west side of our house. Power will be out a while though. I hope there weren't anyone hurt.

That must have been a bit worrying. Pleased everyone ok. Seems as though there have been a fair bit of damage, like trees down, power out etc.. Was watching the live streams of Conway as the storm passed through, amazing. And looking at it now, you wouldn't think they had anything there at all, nice and sunny and dry!

This was alot of fun. I got a picture of the funnel rain wrapped to the point i couldn't tell if it was on the ground. I found out later that it didn't touch down. The wind was approximately 65-75mph where i was, and was causing small debris-limbs to go flying everywhere. Not really that strong, but i got nervous to the point i went into a ditch to get right up against a hill on the west side. It was still rocking my vehicke pretty good.

Remember a derecho is a long lasting severe wind event. I think this got togeather last night. Yes derechos CAN and do produce tornadoes. It's harder for them to because there is so much rain cooled air inside of it. But if thundersorm developes in front of it can become VERY tornadic and have a better chance of produceing a tornado. Derechos mostly produce landspouts on the leading edge of the storm but the're usally brief. They can also develop gust-nadoes. They can cause damage so take them as a tornado!

Wow. Drove right into the base of this storm just west of Jay Oklahoma around 10:30am. Incredible shelf cloud with great rotation and gusts around 80-90mph. Golf ball size hail and very dangerous with all the rain...didn't mean so much to get in that position...

where are all the storm chasers. if anyone knows e mail me at . are they on a diff site. also for the deadliest catch fans and storm chaser fans you can watch the live dutch harbor web cams and track the fishing vessels like we track the storm chasers here at marinetraffic.com. it is really cool to have all the tabs open at once so i do not miss anything at all anywhere.
