Two days before the Kirksville, MO tornado (May 13, 2009), we drove the SRV to Radiance Technologies in Oxford, MS, where engineers Hank Rinehart and Mik Wimbrow were building us a radar to measure the horizontal and vertical winds inside a tornado.  We named this radar CLOVER (Close Range Vertical Radar) since the primary goal is to measure the updraft/downdraft winds inside a tornado, which has never been accomplished to our knowledge.  On May 11, CLOVER was ready to acquire experimental data, so Hank and Mik attached the radar to the back-right of the roof of the SRV for our storm chase in Missouri on May 13.  Here are the pictures and video from the radar installation at Radiance:

Since the Kirksville chase was the first time deploying CLOVER in the field, Hank rode with us and collected radar data when we were under wall clouds and inside the tornado.  The goal of this first chase was to collect experimental data so the radar software and hardware could be optimized at Radiance.  Instead, we got a little more than we bargained for and were able to collect wind data with CLOVER from inside an EF1 to EF2 tornado!  To our knowledge, this was the first time a mobile radar had collected data from within the tornado circulation.  Here is the video from the Kirkville tornado...For this experimental data collection chase, we oriented the radar antenna in the horizontal to measure the rotational winds.  We also measured a 97 mph wind out of the east with the roof-top mounted anemometer, which was in the northern weak side of the tornado, but correlated well with what we measured with CLOVER.  We'll likely be presenting the radar data soon, so stay tuned!

Crap. I remember that day. The tornado happened in a watch with a 70% chance of 2 or more tornadoes. I was chasing in central MO because I thought the SPC would foul up again. Met up with some hail that day.

I saw the Spotter Network reports coming in on that storm and I knew that I missed something great.

I believe that there were only 2-3 tornadoes that day.

Congrats on your accomplishment.

Can only but agree with previous comments.
A truly groundbreaking achievment.

Storm Chasing has been taken to a "NEW" level.
And TVN are the ones that have done it.

Congratulations to everyone thats been involved so far and good luck with all your future research.

Very impressive upgrade.

I'll bet there are more than a few people that would like to see the data that you guys recorded.

Remember rain wrapped tornadoes can be the most deadly! You may just see a large area of rain coming to you and you might not see the tornado until it's upon you! The Kirksville tornado remindes me alot of the tornado that made TVN's first intercept on storm chasers last year.

hey, suggestion if its not already done... is the CLOVER able to be rotated so you dont have to square the vehicle up to the tornado?

Ain't that the darn truth! Reed & company had this ol' lady squirming in her seat trying to help get the SRV turned in the right direction! :o I also agree with MNthunder about CLOVER being able to rotate.

Latest Chase in eastern Colorado 5-24. The tornado scored on this chase was possibly a mile wide.. the page on this chase is up now.. The video of this monster is INSANE!!! I will have it up live by tomorrow.. The size of this tornado was "mind blowing"..

http://severewarningsystems.com/chase_5-24-09.html

The video of this chase will be live on this page.. The still on the large tornado does not even capture the hi-def of this monster that I just previewed.. What an insane chase day for JC... Cheers
