srv_full2After much debate and brainstorming, the TVN Dominator will now be called the Storm Research Vehicle (SRV), since we thought the name Dominator was just a little too cheezy, and we wanted to emphasize the research basis for this vehicle.  The acronym was made fairly generic on purpose, since we will be using the SRV to collect data of all kinds of severe weather features, including tornadoes, wall clouds, and hurricane eyewalls.  The name Dominator was given to the vehicle very early on in a slight joking manner, but caught on a little better than we expected!  We hope everyone likes the new name, and also the new color.  The vertical radar will be mounted on the back-right portion of the roof in a few weeks, and this device was named the CLOVER (Close-Range Vertical Radar).  If the weather will cooperate, we hope to have the SRV in action this Thursday-Saturday for the next storm system building to the west...so bring on the dewpoints!!!

I agree, lucky indeed!
Lots of us here would only dream of getting the chance to even see the SRV... well unless your a storm chaser in the area its probably not a huge deal cause you see em all the time
But I know I would love to see it for my very self!

Even non-storm chasers would be fascinated with it. People know what it's for and curiosity would entice them to stop and take a photo and ask Reed and Co questions. Tourists not remotely interested in severe weather I bet have done the same.

It got tagged the Dominator from the classic and now embedded catch phrase of Dominating...I'm glad Reed changed the name..it was a bit over the top and not professional in a sense to what the vehicle is actually used for - storm research!

I think this was a smart decision. I like Dominator but SRV is more relevant and works. Maybe Dominator can still be it's nick name. SRV a.k.a. Dominator. :P

I noticed you have dual windows, and two windshields. I wonder how that will work with water being blown in between the two and landing on the inside of the outer one?

Don't forget to keep a log of any problems or things you would do different for the next vehicle you build. ;)

Good choice, The name was a little cheezy. ;-) Does all that geer, hinder the performance of the car?

Is this new car heavy enough to hold a F1 tornado?
I remember that the TIV from the other chasers can handle a F1 F2 tornado when it comes over their car.

First of all I like the formal name very much. Secondly when watching the video, was it just me or am I thinking Reed just started a new dance sensation?!? I call it the "5 Point Demo"

Bout time you change it. dominator sounded really really dumb. I watched your video on here when you were trying to get the probe out. Little problem opening the backdoor?? I got a solution, put switch by the driver so before you get out the door is already open. I really don't think you wanna be struggling trying to get that door open with a tornado bearing down on you, but thats my opinion.

Wise Choice of name Reed :)....I suggested S.T.O.R.M. (Storm.Tracking.Observation,and Research Mobile ....Vehicle) ,so SRV is good,i like it.Well played, you lost the cheese.hehe

Great Job on the modifications and name change. While it was Dominator it would have been nice to see it in a Nascar event.
:D

Bearing in mind that what you do for a living is pretty much putting your lives on the line each time you go out. The new name sounds much more 'sensible' I just hope that when you are out there you remember the limitations of the vehicle (and yourselves) and bring us back some quality footage shot from it.

I like the new name. Yes it is more official. Yes you could have left the name Dominator, but what would the science community think? They would probably think you were from Nebraska running around in a pick-up during storms.... OH WAIT, thats me.
