8.19.10.500mb-sfc1Another multi-day severe weather event will likely kick off this afternoon across portions of Wisconsin, southern Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas. Tomorrow appears to hold the best chances for widespread severe weather, though, as an intense impulse of mid-level energy will be moving out of northern Nebraska and into the eastern plains of South Dakota and southern Minnesota. With surface winds expected from the east and southeast, this would provide the necessary low-level shear and abundant moisture typical of an environment ripe for supercell development. Right now it appears that the greatest tornado threat will exist over most of eastern South Dakota into extreme northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota -- not surprisingly, given the history of this storm season. These storms will likely be capable of extremely large hail as well. There will undoubtedly be a number of northern Plains chasers covering the activity over the next several days, and you can always follow along on the Live page.

Also, check out the latest video representing one of the chapters of Reed's book, INTO THE STORM!
