Here is an incredible photo shot by Joel's dad, Jimmy Taylor, from 6 miles NNW of Elk City, OK, just after the tornado touched down.  He said it crossed the road about 1/4 mile in front of him, and that we could have driven into it no problem with the Dominator.  Incredible video from Mike Scantlin and Jeff Snyder still come!

Elk City Tornado Picture from Jimmy Taylor

And now the 2010 Tornado Season Begins! May the Chasers have plenty to chase- out in open country where no one has a home, and may no one, whether chaser or Local Resident be injured. And may it all be captured for data and on film and movie chip.

-42 #1 tomparker 2010-03-08 21:49 No doubt this photo was taken more than ¼ mile away. Read the statement below then ask yourself what I did. If you were only ¼ mile away, why wouldn't you have taken a photo then?

Sounds like a bunch of bologna to me.

+20 #2 PASkywarn 2010-03-08 22:03 Actually, if you read the post again, it does not say that the photo was taken from ¼ mile away; it says the tornado crossed the road ¼ mile in front of him. No road in this shot…post says "right after tornado touched down" not as it crossed the road. As for why a picture wasn't taken when it was ¼ mile in front of him, if a tornado is ¼ mile in front and crossing the road, things can get a little hectic and it is kind of hard to take a good picture and drive at the same time. For instance if the pic was taken with a dslr, they are a little large to be taking a pic with one hand.

Nice picture regardless.

-46 #3 tomparker 2010-03-08 22:09 Dude, can you read or what? I said…"No doubt this photo was taken from more than ¼ mile away. My point being if you are closer to a Tornado, then why not take that picture instead of one taken from further away.

Secondly, I can't buy the fact that if you are that close to a tornado you aren't going to snap a few pictures no matter what. I'm not buying that fact he was anywhere closer to the tornado than the picture above indicates (which is farther than ¼ mile away).

+13 #4 PASkywarn 2010-03-08 22:19 Have you ever been in/near a tornado? Sometimes life and safety matters a little more than a better photo opportunity. Tornado ¼ mile away…do I stop and take a better pic than the one I got, considering if I pull over to get that pic, I could be putting myself in harms way or do I pay attention to my surroundings?

If you're not there (nor was I, but being caught in one while driving I have been), there are too many factors going on to try and make a guess on why someone did or did not take a picture that you thought they should have taken. Its quite trivial and honestly what's the point of trying to figure it out? If you have been sitting ¼ mile away from a tornado in a car, then you would have a pretty good idea of all the extenuating circumstances that could prevent you from taking a picture at that time.

+14 #5 btomsTVN 2010-03-08 22:22 Wow nice shot Jimmy. What a way to kick off the plains tornado season, one of the first pictures of a tornado in 2010 and an amazing one at that. Super congrats!

And PA, ignore tomparker, he's just trying to troll.

+14 #6 TxTwister 2010-03-08 22:27 Awesome pic, beautiful tornado!

And how do we know photos WEREN'T taken from ¼ mile away? Maybe none of them were as good as this one. It's just a classic, beautiful funnel. And, nice person that I am, I will not rheam tomparker out, though I would really, really like to!

+10 #7 PASkywarn 2010-03-08 22:34 I agree, it is nice to see such a great shot :)

I guess when a person goes through all of the training to chase and photograph the "safe" way, (if there really is such a thing), it just gets under my skin a little when people think it is just easy to drive up to a tornado and snap a great picture.

-42 #8 tomparker 2010-03-08 22:50 I'm not saying it isn't a nice photo, I'm just saying this is all the closer he got and the store about being ¼ mile away is total bs.

Stick to the facts you lamers. If you are that close to a tornado, you are getting some kind of photo other than what is posted above. You mean he only took 1 photo? I think the crap is getting deep here.

-41 #9 tomparker 2010-03-08 22:52 Try to be a little mature here people. You are being scammed and lied to.

+9 #10 Capps 2010-03-08 23:25 You're just jealous and you spelled "store" wrong its story lamer maybe you should spend more time learning how to spell and less time talking shit…

+10 #13 kmccusker 2010-03-08 23:37 Beautiful photo, Jimmy! :)

tomparker, I didn't see anything in the original post to indicate that this was the ONLY photo taken. There may be dozens more - he's certainly not obligated to share every photo he took… the photo shared above is beautiful and deserving of much awe and admiration in and of itself. Perhaps he DID take photos from the ¼ mile mark, but for any number of reasons, he chose to share only this photo. A camera can capture movement as blur, especially without a sturdy mount, and even moreso from shorter distances. And if he DIDN'T capture any photos from his closest distance, does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? If all else fails, perhaps you could make better use of your time by dropping the conspiracy theories and capturing the next tornado on film yourself, since you feel you know best how things 'ought' to be done?

Once again, thanks for sharing this beautiful photo! I look forward to seeing more.

+43 #14 Joel Taylor 2010-03-09 00:11 Considering this was the first time my dad has ever used his camera phone, I would say the pic isn't too bad.

Where this pic was taken is about halfway between the ranch where I grew up and Elk. He was on his way back to town after working for the day when the tornado developed and crossed the road. This pic was probably taken when it was a couple of miles to the north. My dad continued to follow it towards Hammon but pulled off when it hit a mobile home which is where he was a quarter mile away. He stopped there to make sure the people were ok.

My dad has gone chasing with me a dozen or so times and has had some pretty good luck and experiences. Driving, navigating, and documenting (with a camera he wasn't sure how to use) solo for the first time ever and I think he got a pic any stormchaser would be proud of.

tomparker - remember, one photo taken at an instant in time does not equal an entire chase. Don't be so condescending.

+6 #16 robsamson 2010-03-09 02:34 Lovely photograph. Props to Jimmy for this great shot and Joel for putting how it came to exist into perspective! Sounds like it would have been exciting to witness/get near this one and glad that nobody was seriously hurt! Great job everyone who participated/is participating and is currently making TVN and its brothers and sisters successful! This is going to be a great year for storm chasing, severe weather studies and Meteorology I just know it!

+5 #17 Joanna762 2010-03-09 04:09 Excellent photo and thanks for sharing it with us. Not many of us get the chance to take a photo like that, no matter how close or far away it is! How exciting! Thank you Joel's Dad and thank you Joel for posting.

-36 #19 tomparker 2010-03-09 04:50 I just love what can be done with photoshop and a little white lie. lol Keep up the good work with the photoshop, but put forth a bit more effort into telling the white lies.

P.S I can't wait for the video. I bet NOTHING looks the same in the video. Hmmm, and you are probably wondering why.

Just remember and never forget how honesty goes a long way in life.

+7 #23 SeanRobbins 2010-03-09 09:27 Maybe I don't understand the true argument here but if you are saying something has been photoshoped, then validate your argument with evidence or proof. Example: you are a douche. Validation: quote below. Take a more active roll in your argument, otherwise you just look jealous and bitter.

+8 #24 CoreyBob-Hookah 2010-03-09 09:49 I smell the start of the new tornado season! It smells wonderful!

+7 #25 sburson85 2010-03-09 10:54 Well, the first thing I want to say is I think we're all glad that it seems Joel is back. Secondly, great capture, highly disappointed I decided to not go into oklahoma and just stayed home.
Now as for the guy seeking attention, if you seem to think your as great as you seem to be, take your happy a— out and find yourself a tornado, put your mouthy self within a ¼ mile and you take a picture if you feel that your such hot sh-t. Had i been within ¼ mile with damage occuring, the last thing i would think about would be taking a picture. Maybe you just have a mental disorder that prohibits you from thinking about others lives first and just think about personal satisfaction so you can gloat to persons that dont care. Be considerite, these guys are nice enough to put all this up for everyone to enjoy and dont make you pay to view any of it, which we all can agree they easily could.
