Supercells have exploded today over the Pampas of Argentina around Santa Rosa in La Pampa province, stretching to as far west as near Mendoza in the foothills of the Andes. A powerful trough was forecast to traverse southern South America today, with a 35-40 knot northerly low-level jet developing around Santa Rosa to Santa Fe. Based on satellite imagery and radar, the most intense supercell looks to be parked directly over Santa Rosa, where I bet massive hail is falling, and even a possible tornado just north of the city once again. Another very strong supercell is raging over eastern Mendoza province where I bet hail to the size of baseballs is falling, but the tornado threat is a little less likely given weaker low-level shear further west. I'm thinking Matias and Ramiro are watching the Santa Rosa supercell as I write this, but I haven't heard anything from them yet today. We'll be posting their video and pictures as soon as they can make it to internet! At left is the satellite image from the Pampas showing the overshooting tops and wide-reaching anvils as of aroun 7:30 pm Argentina time (sunset is around 9:00 pm there), and the Santa Rosa radar image rom just before 8:00 pm. Stay tuned for updates!
