jan3_500.96hrAll models are indicating a strong upper-level trough will be located just west of Chile on January 3, pumping moisture and instability southward from the Amazon Basin and inducing an unseasonable 35-40 knot low-level jet across the Pampas on the 3rd and 4th.  The image at left is the 500 mb height forecast for 12z on January 3rd, showing the highly amplified storm system moving toward southern South America.  We're currently located in Buenos Aires, and are about to head to the beach at Plata de Mars for New Years Eve and some serious sunburn, but then will be heading to our initial target between Santa Rosa and Mendoza on the 2nd.  We'll be bringing two of our friends at the meteorlogy department at the University of Buenos Aries with us for their first storm chase -- Ramiro and Matias, both very knowledgable in Argentinian severe weather, but they have never had the opportunity to chase here yet.  We'll be uploading more pictures from the last few days tomorrow, including some CRAZY driving in Buenos Aries during rush hour, and our presentation at the University of Buenos Aries.  I love it here....I thought Canada was the promised land for storm chasing, but Argentina puts it to shame.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hi Reed! My name is Fabrizio I'm 20 years old and i'm from Buenos Aires. I wonder if you plan to make another appearance at the University of Buenos Aires. As a great admirer of your work since I was a kid I would like to meet the team and take a picture with you guys! If it is impossible now I'm sure there will be another opportunity in the future. See you and good luck! (Sorry for my English)

It's funny how here in North America we rarely ever hear about the amazing weather that occurs in Argentina so often. I'm chasing in the second-place promised land this year due to the lack of general madness up there (less chasers and media on the road) but I'll keep argentina as well as australia in mind.

Happy New Year Reed, and the whole team. Is the best way to start the new year, chasing storms.
Greeting a friend in southern Brazil.
