lakeeffect1As extremely cold southwest to westerly winds have been blowing across the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, intense snowbands have developed in the favored snowbelt regions of Southwest Lower Michigan, and in the Buffalo and Watertown, NY areas.  Here in Grand Rapids, MI, we have been experiencing 2+ inch per hour snowfall rates this morning with gusts to 40 mph, which has created blizzard conditions and treacherous road conditions.  As I write this post, we are getting hammered with some of the heaviest snow I have ever seen, and we are about to deploy to stream live video for the rest of the event.  Check out our live stream at TornadoVideos.net/live throughout the day as we document this historic 2009 blizzard!  Also, we've been uploading short video blogs to our I-phone app, Storm Troopers, throughout the event.  We'll also be posting a highlight video on our Youtube channel later tonight.  Stay tuned for updates!

Very true Shellykzoo! Forget the ole television...just grab a chair (and a jacket or 2 ) and let the snow entertain you!

...However, be ready to catch Storm Chasers Sunday nights...That's not worth missing

Lake effect snow, anyone??

Imagine spending an entire night stuck in your vehicle. Weeee! Thank God for ATVs and snowmobiles and the like.

This article is brief, but has a simple diagram of what/how lake effect snow is produced.

Lake effect snow is crazy. If you are outside of the snow bands, you might not get any snow but if you are in one of the bands, you can get dumped on. I sorta remember with the blizzard of 78 (now that was a real blizzard!) they only predicted an inch or two of snow but we got hit by the Lake Effect and the next day we could not even open the front door because a drift completely covered it. We were snowed in for about 2 weeks. One drift covered the whole side of the house. The men on our street got together and walked a couple miles in the snow to get groceries and supplies because after several days of being snowed in, we needed stuff. I have not seen a storm like that since but I know it can happen. I also would like to know how the Lake affects the weather in Michigan in the Spring and Summer.

Been keeping an eye on it from here too. Going to post some pics later today with the lighthouse in view. I'm only blocks away from where the S.S.Badger comes in to dock thru the 2 break walls

Man that lake effect weather is 'insane' Reed . Thank God this doesn't produce tornadoes.
