04_dec_2009_houstonWinter storm warnings have been issued for parts of Southeast Texas into Southwest Louisiana as record breaking snowfall has already begun to pound the region.  Rain has changed over to all snow in the last few hours over Southeast Texas, with heavy snow in the counties surrounding Houston of Jackson, Pearland, Fresno, and Fort Bend, with an inch of snow already reported in Jackson County.  Isolated accumulations of 4-5 inches appear likely over some areas, especially in the slighly higher elevations away from the coast.  The main features responsible for this event are the powerful cold front that swept across the Central U.S. and is forecast to dig south toward the Yucatan, and the uplift associated with the right entrance region of a jet streak embedded wtihin a massive western U.S. trough.  The combination of these ingredients is forecast to result in an historic winter storm across a region that rarely ever experiences snow!  Stay tuned for updates, and be sure to check out the Live page for any chasers in the region!

I can't believe Houston, Texas area has snow before Chicago! I live in the Chicagoland area and we just received the first measurable snow at O'Hare last night at two tenths of an inch

Whoa.... Up here in Manitoba, we've been getting lake effect snow for a couple of days. Our lakes are not yet frozen over and now a blizzard for the gulf states? This is very strange indeed. Nino?

Dave Holder, you sound like a weatherman from an episode of Charlie Brown. wah wah wah wah. haha

Flew down to Houston yesterday, staying east of Galveston. Can't wait for this snow to hit us! Maybe the snow will reach Tn tonight... have some snow in the back yard =) Seems like everywhere we go there is record breaking weather! This trip had been planned for months, glad it decided to snow =D

this is just beautifully strange weather for texas...
i'll bet the kids of the area find this a little bittersweet - it's shown up on a friday, probably late enough not to mess with school at all. not often is there even a tease of school delays and cancellations for snow around there. Still really interesting though.

It's crazy that there is snow in Texas... Here we are in December and we've only had a tiny amount of snow here in Utah. Usually it starts in October!
