kirksville10I hope everyone enjoyed the 3rd episode!  Personally, I was curled up in the fetal position in agony during most of it, but don't worry, the next episode is when the real action starts and will be non-stop tornado intercept insanity from here on out.  It was difficult to watch the Joel situation unfold...One thing that was not shown is that he continually backed out of 5-6 chases before the one shown in this episode, and if we executed on his schedule, we only would have seen a few tornadoes last season.  He has several priorities that are higher than storm chasing, and  I can't continually devote all my energy to convincing him to chase the "marginal" setups, especially when those are when we've seen some of our best tornadoes in the past.  Over the last several years, I've had to go on many solo storm chases as far north as the Canadian Border because I couldn't convince him to chase, and it's very difficult to pull the all-night drives solo with a chase the next day.  That's one of the main reasons Chris moved down from Michigan, so I could have a dependable chase partner with equivalent passion for seeing tornadoes and executing our scientific goals.  Of course, Joel and I are still really good friends, and hopefully he'll be back behind the wheel of the Dominator next season..

whiteneckNext episode shows the Kirksville, MO tornado, and it will feature some TVN footage from inside the tornado that has not yet been released!  So be sure to tune in.  This was our first intercept with the radar on top of the vehicle, and we had it pointed horizontally to calibrate.  We then returned it to Radiance Technologies to fine-tune, and had two intercepts on June 15 and 17 with it pointed in the vertical.  Once those episodes air, I'll share some of the vertical wind results we collected in those tornadoes.

Discovery also just released a new behind-the-scenes clip showing camera operator/producer Chris Whiteneck in the field!  He has been in the back of the Dominator for the last two seasons, and is definitely one of the best camera operators in the world - working for Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch before Storm Chasers.  To watch this clip, click on the link below and select the "Mobile Storm Chasing Office" video...

I am enjoying the season so far except for the rif between Joel and Reed. That is frankly not fun to watch. I have been keeping up with you two since that first program on PBS that aired several years ago while you two were still in school.

I am also somewhat put off by Dr. Wurman and his attitude toward Sean Casey. Josh needs to lighten up. Last year seemed to have more of a TEAM feel to it. I know Josh and Sean have had their frustrations with each other but that crap in the 3rd episode really put me off on Dr. Wurman. I guess he is letting that $12 million dollar grant get to his head. And Vortex 2 only captured one good tornado all season long. By the time they hit the road, half the season was already over!

I think Sean is a big baby, Josh seems very intelligent and passionate but his head has been blown up with this Vortex 2 project. You are not the King of Storm Chasing! Like Reed said, there is room for everyone on the road, I couldn't believe he threatened Reed's team! Reed I love you, you always stay positive no matter what, and don't let anyone else tell u otherwise!!! If Joel won't drive y'all there are a million people willing to take his place!!! REED IS THE KING because he just wants to chase tornadoes, help science advance, teach others and show his footage.

I'm looking forward to seeing the footage inside the tornado. I'm glad you and Joel are still good friends. That was painful to watch. But anyone who chases can understand that happens. I know it's happened to me.

It's good your both still good friends, things happen in life and you'll both learn from it. I'm already sick of Vortex2 after this episode, but that's another story....If you ever need another Michigan guy, they call me the navigator for a reason.

Good to hear, Reed! Next week looks awesome! And Considering what happened within the last few weeks of last season, I can't wait to see how it all plays out in Storm Chasers' remaining episodes! :)

Glad to hear you guys are ok. It was uncomfortable to watch, I like the team the way it was! We'll wait for Joel to come around. I'm tired of Josh, I hope you didn't take his crap

Yeah, it was a little uncomfortable to watch. However, not to worry: the person who came off the worst in that episode was... Sean. I thought he was a little flaky last season but last night - SHEESH!!!

P.S. - I remember all the hoopla over Vortex2 before it started. Didn't really live up to its hype, at least not last spring.

P.P.S. - Whatever happened to Howie Bluestein???!! Why is he not part of the show? Just curious. ;-)

Reed - looked good... with last week and this week's, carried yourself as well as you could. I am sure you wanted to strangle Sean after watching that episode last week (I did...).

Glad to hear it gets back to the goods next week - I was beginning to think Discovery was trying to compete with Desperate Housewives there for a minute (oh the drama).

Sorry I missed you this weekend in GR - look forward to catching up soon. Take care and good luck.

PS - shoot me your email when you can.

I'm new to the Stormchasers series but have quickly become addicted. This last episode seemed like the tension was high not only with your team. It was sad to watch the rift between you and Joel but what you said is right you can't work with anyone who you can't trust or depend on especially in your line of work. Glad to hear something like this didn't come in between your friendship though. Maybe he needs time away to reprioritize and hopefully we will see him back. Meanwhile this season looks to be fantastic!!

After the last show I was thinking about not watching anymore. It seems like it's more about the personal drama than it is about storm chasing. I know it's all about ratings, but what drew me in to the show in the first place was the excitement that comes with the chase and catching that amazing footage of the twister in action. Not the distruction, but the beauty of the storm. I will hang in for a little while longer and hope that the show goes back to what made it fun to watch.

P.S Good friends are really hard to find. Don't throw away your years of friendship with Joel.

Get me behind the wheel, that car will do whatever Reed wants it to do, no questions asked.

The episode was a little un-eventful, but it's fun watching Sean Casey get all frustrated too, poor fella. To me the chase and not knowing what you're gonna get is the best part. The tornado is a nice little reward. It's great to see nice wall clouds. They are still one of the most beautiful looking things around.

It was definitely a difficult show to watch. Difficult only because it was hard to watch a friendship becoming strained. Don't give up a friendship over this. If you can't work together, you can't work together, no big deal. But it's very clear you guys make a good team, working together or not.

that is good you are still friends with Joel. I always say that I would be all over chasing tornadoes and it is probably a huge reason why a website like this and a tv show like that always fascinate me.

Looking forward to the rest of the season!

wow.... last night's episode was excruciating!! I'm usually Team Taylor but it looked like he has been having some serious committment issues lately.... Although looking at some old youtube videos it seems like you guys get into the occasional spat anyways, but after last night's episode it seems heavier than that.... I'm sure there's a little more to it than what TV lets on to though! Joel or no Joel you guys seem to find the best location to film the tornadoes anyways - keep ROCKIN' IT and thanks for the update.

p.s. what was Joel's take on the episode - kinda made him look like "the bad guy".....

Why doesn't Sean hook up with Reed's crew for a month next season? Reed always seems to get a lot closer than Sean ever has... Doesn't make any sense to me why they couldn't help eachother out... It's win/win!

Hi Reed!
I think Sean ought to be complimented that you saw the benefits being in an armored vehicle provided him last year, benefits you acquired for yourself this year. Sorry he didn't see your new vehicle as the compliment it is. :sigh:
Meanwhile, I see Sean has a new IMAX out, so maybe he did get that big Pay Shot! We'll just have to watch and see. :-)

Ahh, can't wait for next weeks episode. Its gonna be insane! May 13th was a great chase day, only problem was we go their a little late, and the tornado had gotten rain wrapped. I did however capture some amazing wall cloud footage with classic inflow, close to "gators mouth" inflow.

Howdy Reed! I know you have heard this alot, but last night was hard to watch. I hated to see the rift between you and Joel, but am glad to hear that ya'll are still friends. What's up with Dr. Worman? I've always had tremendous respect for him, but was quite upset to see and hear the way he talked to you and Sean. Maybe it's time for you and Sean to work together for a bit, and remind DR. Worman, that for whatever reason we chase, we need to be respectful of different goals. Oh, BTW, Did your radar interfer with the DOW?
Looking forward to next week! Tammy

Wow! Nice news, except the part with Joel, I'm really going to miss Joel... you, Joel and Chris work perfectly together. At least you still are good friends and that's the important thing.

Can't wait for the footages inside that tornado! :D

WOW... well put Reed... Your passion, drive and devotion will make a big difference. For us that chase, we know the real deal of agony and defeat. But when we get a home run... YES !!!

Good comments on the "marginal" setups... How true is that! Thanks for being real. Its time to plan on 2010 in a continued research mode. The best is yet to come.. Great blog comments Reed. Cheers to all of the TVN team!

Great job guys, back to the show now, I am liking it better. True Reed chase even if theres a little chance, because that little chance can produce big! Good Luck Guys! Sorry, I really though that Dr. Wurman doing that to Sean was just RUDE. Loved The Rainbow Intercepts! His Lost Puppy thing was so needed! The Dog needed a home! :)

Wow all i can say that last night show was very odd... I just don't know whats going on between Josh Wurman & Sean! That was un called for Josh Wuman what he said to Sean when he was @ the SPC building in Norman Ok. Sean needs Josh Wurman so BAD to get that darn picture he been working on so LONG.. & another thing what been going on is why is Jeoel why is he so grouchy and mean to the other TVN ppl? Does he not want to work with them any more? I really like that Sean had found him a puppy!! I hope he can take good care of him will storm chasing too... @ least Esisode 4 will be more exciting!!! MO will be in it!!

I thought ep. 3 was boring, I'm sorry. I love sean little one liners and wisecracks, kinda reminds me of me.

Good choice on Joel. He was a great team member last year and this year you could tell priorities had changed. He needs to go his own direction, so let him go and stop pushing. Glad Chris is jumping into the front seat. Old Man Wurman is just that, needs to bump his people skills up quite a bit in my opinion. It's artists like Sean and their work that is going to inspire the next generation of storm chasers and the scientists who support them. I realize Wurman has his own set of problems working with a complex multi-million dollar government grant, but that was his choice, and that does not excuse the arrogant way he treats Reed and Sean or the failure to build a plan that compensates for his vulnerabilities in regard to people skills. Once you're in charge, people will only follow you if you look like you know where you're going and actually care about those who will follow. Maybe that's why Reed and Sean are on their own. Wurman, travel well and, breathe!

I am def. A TVN/REED Fan!

All I can say is any two people who spend alot of time together will have differing opinions!
