Derecho taking shape in midwest! PDF Print E-mail

An intense line of thunderstorms is screaming across the state of Illinois at this time, leaving numerous severe wind reports in it's wake. Trees and power poles have been taken down in both Iowa and Illinois, and structural damage has been reported from McDonough County, Illinois.
It is likely that this system is evolving/intensifying into a derecho, and it will continue into Indiana and points east as the day progresses. Right now severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are in place for central Illinois and Indiana; I would not be surprised if the watch box in Indiana is upgraded to a "PDS" watch box as the more intense system enters the state!

This Derecho produced a nice Outflow Boundary earlier this afternoon. I believe it has initiated storm, that is heading right for Nashville (Me)! 30% Hail risk, 2% Tornado. Interesting to see!

There's been massive flooding from a storm that basically parked itself over Louisville. Many major highways are closed or backed up, and so many buildings, including at the U of Louisville campus, have tons of water surrounding and inundating the basements and bottom floors. And the derecho is not going to help at all, esp since apparently it keeps dropping brief tornadoes at times.

NO! It was coming my way and then all of a sudden the derecho shifted south on me! I ended up just gettin a lot of flooding here and a few places underwater. Most of the damage and flooding stayed West.

I'm in Urbana, IL, which got hit hard.

I was walking home about 10 minutes before the derecho struck. At that time the conditions were changing rapidly. I could see/feel a cold front blowing in from the north while this system blew in from the west.

There was a gust front moments before the storm hit, but unlike most gust fronts, the wind actual became more intense as the storm was overhead. I would estimate major gusts of 60-70 mph or so with sustained winds around 50 mph (although I don't have an anemometer). The storm system moved very rapidly - NWS estimated that it was moving west at about 50 mph.

It was pretty exciting. Those were the most intense sustained straight-line winds that I have ever experienced.

I have seen even worse winds though, they were well over 100 mph, and i have an anemometer. It left hundreds of thousands of people around here without power, it was pretty cool! There were so many trees all over the place. Everything was closed for well over a week. Most trees were uprooted and tossed every which way, there was no leaving your house either because there was so much damage everywhere. The winds ended up knocking me down when i went to go outside, that was kinda funny.

ok anyone who can tell me how in the world to get those anoying flashing circles that show past weather happenings off the live chaser map please e mail me at . they just popped up there a couple weeks ago. not sure if this is a new feature i have no control over or if i clicked on somthing that caused them to show up all of a sudden. the other day they were blocking the view of the available chasers, and the storms were hard to view also. when sliding my curser over them some of the info was from 2003 also. i also cannot click on a chaser that is streaming when they are behind those circles, instead i get the video recording of the weather event. so i would like to get rid of those flashing icons. anyone know how?

Looks like you caught me on your screen shots! We tried so hard to get nailed by the wind, but the highest we got was 53mph. The car icon with MIDSCAR1 is me. Chased it to Crawfordsville, IN before giving up. Looked at some damage in Attica, IN then went back home. Can't complain...this storm took us by surprise so we didn't have much time to act
