Damage surveys confirm EF-2 tornadoes from July 30 event PDF Print E-mail

The National Weather Service in Memphis has concluded the damage surveys following the "mini-outbreak" that occurred in the mid-South on July 30. The photo shown at left was taken in Desoto County, Mississippi, where an EF-2 tornado touched down between Olive Branch and Lewisburg. This tornado was estimated at up to a quarter-mile wide at times! A few subdivisions in southeast Oliver Branch took direct hits, but, remarkably, there were no injuries reported. phillipsAnother EF-2 tornado occurred in Phillips Co, AR; this tornado crossed the river into Mississippi, where EF-2 level damage continued in Coahoma County. This tornado began in near the town of Tichnor in Arkansas County, AR, and had a path length of over 32 miles. Roughly one thousand trees were lost in the White River National Wildlife Refuge, and structural damage occurred in Mosby and Jackson Point, AR, as well as in Burke Landing, Mississippi.
shelbyThe Memphis-area tornadoes were thankfully not quite as strong, where maximum intensity of EF-1 was determined in Shelby Co. Several businesses and recreation areas were damaged during this tornado, which began just east of Interstate-40 and had a path length of just over 2 miles.
